LAKE PLACID, NY - A young Trappers hockey team proudly celebrated as champions just like Team USA did perform the "Miracle on Ice" back in 1980.

But instead of Jim Craig wearing the American flag at centre ice like in 1980, the North Bay team - which was the only Canadian squad in their division - had its players draped in a Canadian flag at centre ice.

The North Bay Major AA Atom Trappers claimed gold last weekend in a tough 3-2 battle between the Tri-City Eagles AA from Laurel, Maryland at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid Sunday morning.

The Trappers had lost their only game of the three-day tournament against Tri-City Eagles AA Friday morning 3-1.

The North Bay team started their winning streak when they beat the St. Lawerence Steel AA 6-1 followed by a 6-0 win over the  Boston Junior Terriers.

Those wins moved the local major atoms on to the semi-finals where they again upended the St. Lawrence Steel, this time in a closer 3-1 win.

Trappers goaltender Justin Robinson secured the Player of the Game in the Championship Game and the speedy Jesse Lefebvre was awarded the MVP of the tournament.

The team is comprised of Robinson, Patrick Danis, Johnny Couch, Davis Anello, Noah St. Jean, Ethan Desjardins, Nate Gravelle, Cayden Kowal, Zachary Major, Marshall McCharles, Lefebvre, Ayden Thomason, Nolan Newton, Mathieu Turgeon, Tyler Moore, Masen Wray and Caleb Dawson. Coaches are John Couch, Glen Gravelle, Troy Lefebvre, Manager Denis Major, Trainer Remi St. Jean, Treasuer Shelley Newton, Fundraising Coordinator Carmen Anello and team webmaster Sheila Toner.
