MAJOR PEEWEE

The winning ways continue for the Savignac Woodwork Major Peewee Trappers despite the small set back.

The Major Peewee continue to rebound from their slow start out of the gate with a 7-1-2 record in their last 10 games taking 4 of a possible 6 points from the visiting Timmins North stars this past weekend in Sturgeon Falls.  The first game would see the Trapper's offence come to life with a 7-2 victory.   A balanced attack and solid defensive play would prove to be the difference in the win.  In game 1 the Chase Thompson line would open the scoring in the first period with an assist going to Justin Turgeon heading with the team into the second period with the 1-0 lead.  Thompson with his second of the game and goals from Kaedyn Long and Aiden Lucier with assists going to Nolan Masson on the Long goal would see the Trappers leading 4-1 after two periods as Timmins would score 1 in the second.

The offense would continue for the hungry Trapper team scoring 3 more in third from Thom Sefton, Cooper Brazeau and Riley Wolfe with assists going to Long on the Brazeau goal and Carson Laronde on the Wolfe strike sealing the 7-2 win.

Vaughn Thomson was in net for the Trapper win as Timmins would add 1 goal in the third.

Game 2 of the 3 game set saw a feisty Timmins team jump out o an early 2 goal lead in the first with no reply from the Trappers.  The teams would exchange goals in the second with Nolan Masson scoring off a pass from Carson Laronde for the Trappers heading into the third period down 3-1.

The Trappers team intent on keeping their winning streak alive would score 2 in the third period from Chase Thompson and Kaedyn Long with Masson collecting an assist on the Long goal bringing the Trappers to within 1 now trailing 4-3.

With the pressure on and the goalie pulled the Trappers mounted an attack pinning the Timmins team in their zone for the last 2 minutes of the game but could not score despite several good scoring chances.  Timmins would hang on 4-3 handing the Trappers their first regular season loss in the last 8 games.

The third and final game of the set would set the tone for the coming Ontario Winter Games qualifier in Timmins as both teams refused to give an inch.

The Trappers would score twice in the first period from Thompson and Masson with assists going to Lucier and Cooper Brazeau respectively.  The North stars would add one of their own to cut the first period Trapper lead by one.  The second period would see 3 goals scored off the sticks of the Trappers with Carson Laronde scoring twice and Fin Gould scoring a beauty goal off of a rush beating two North stars going upstairs on the short side leaving the Trapper team up 5-2.

Lucier and Alex Dubuc provided the support for the Laronde and Gould goals.

Timmins would make the game interesting as the hardworking Timmins squad would score twice in the third but would not prove to be enough as the Trappers held on for the 5-4 win.

The Major Peewees travel to Timmins this coming weekend to earn the right to represent the NOHA at the Ontario Winter Games in a round robin showcase.

MAJOR BANTAM

After another weekend off the Dig Safe Major Bantam AAA Trappers were eager to hit the road to take part in the Vaughan Kings Classic Tournament.  The boys’ first opponent was the Lambton Jr. Sting.  In this morning match-up, the Trappers came out of the gates hard and built a 4-0 lead early on in the game. They went on to defeat their opponent by a score of 7-5.  This was a great way to start the tournament.  They Dig Safe Trappers did not play again until late Friday evening when they took on the London Jr. Knights (the eventual tournament champs.).  The boys played their best game of the tournament, keeping it very close despite losing the by a score of 3-2, with the Knights scoring the go-ahead goal at the tail end of the third period.

On Saturday the boys had two round-robin games to play.  Their first game saw the team go head-to-head with the Peterborough Petes.  This game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams exchanging penalties and goals.  The Pete's eventually won the game by a score of 2-1.

This meant that the Trappers had to win their evening game in order to have a chance to move on to the playoff round.  The Trappers took advantage of some opportunities and played a solid defensive system to defeat their American opponents, the Sylvannia North Stars from Ohio, by a score of 3-0.

This set up a 10 p.m. match-up against the Chatam-Kent Cyclones.  In this physical and chippy affair, the Cyclones struck first with 2 quick goals.  Despite falling behind early, the Trappers responded by scoring 3 consecutive powerplay goals to take a 3-2 lead into the last minute of the third period.

The Cyclones tied the game up with 53 seconds left to send this tilt into overtime.  The 3-on-3 overtime ended with the Trappers losing to the eventual tournament finalists.

The coaches were extremely happy with the effort that the boys gave over the weekend.  Their powerplay was very effective during the tournament, but they will continue to hone their offense going into the upcoming weekend against the Nickel City Sons.
