Titans dominate first meet at new aquatic center

Last weekend saw the North Bay Titan Swim Team host its first meet in the North Bay Aquatic Center.
Last weekend saw the North Bay Titan Swim Team host its first meet in the North Bay Aquatic Center. Twelve teams from Northern Ontario showed up for the 3 days of events which saw swimmers from 6 to 19 years old compete in either the sprint or Ironman categories (1500 free, 400 IM, 400 free, 200 fly and 800 free). This meet has been hosted in Sturgeon Falls for many years and this year was the first opportunity to have all of these teams in North Bay and the new facility. The meet ran exceptionally well and was a great success to all of the athletes who attended. The Titans managed to win the meet handily with over 760 points compared to the second place team from Sault Ste. Marie who had 270 points.

The individual performances of the swimmers was extremely impressive with several winning high point awards. Ashley Duquette won the 13 & 14 girls in the sprint category with 4 golds and 2 silvers, Dominique Bouchard won the Ironman high point category for 13 and under girls with 5 gold. Morgan Brown won the 13 & 14 boys sprint high point with 4 golds, despite the fact that he was only in to swim on one day of the meet. Samantha Crossley won the 15 & Over Ironman high point with 5 golds while Kendra Driscoll won the 15 & Over girls sprint high point trophy with 7 gold medals. Philip Newman was runner up in the high point trophy for 15 and Over boys with 4 gold and 3 silver in 7 events while the others swam in 8 events.

Other notable swims were all of the ironman competitors for the Titans; Emma Hawes (11), Kelsey O’Connor (12), Brittany Roy (11), Maleah Seguin (12), Shelby Twilt (13) and Angelina Racine who at the age of 10 decided to more up an age category and compete with the 11 & 12 year olds in the toughest of events in competitive swimming. There were many swimmers who tried their hand in the precompetitive side of the meet and placed well.

Samantha Cowan(8) had a gold and silver, Madison Fraser (8) a bronze, Mark Frederick (8) a forth place finish, Megan Frederick (10) gold, silver and 3 bronze, Jeremy Sallie (10) 3 silver, Tait Seguin (10) gold, 2 silvers, Max Sherry (12) 2 bronze, Sylvia Spina (10) a bronze, Clay Twilt (11) silver, 3 bronze, Nel Vandermeer (15) 4 gold and a silver, Alex Vodden (10) several top 10 finishes, Leah Watson (18) 3 gold and 2 silver, Paul Wilkinson (9) gold, and Kristen Zamperoni (8) a bronze.

The North Bay Titans finish there season with the NEOR/Huronia Regional Championships this upcoming weekend, Junior Provincial Championships at the beginning of July in Etobicoke and with Club Nationals in Winnipeg at the end of July. The team awards are in 2 weeks and the club will end the season on June 19 with their annual awards banquet. For full results of the Titan Invitational Swim Meet see the scoreboard.
