Thunderbirds spread their wings in Long Course Event

The CT33 Thunderbird Swim Team competed at the NEOR Developmental meet last weekend in Sudbury.

Swimmers from across the northeast converged on the Jeno Tihanyi Olympic Gold Pool at Laurentian University. This Swim Ontario sanctioned event was hosted by the Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club. This is the first long course meet of the season, providing developmental opportunities for young swimmers.  

Owen Baas, 10, posted personal best times, broke club records and placed first in all five events in his age category. Trael Daly Stevens, 16, also placed first in all five of his events breaking club record in the 200 metre Medley event in his age category.

Other swimmers achieving first place finishes were Robby Baas, 12, Abigail Betsill, 12, Albert Bouley, 12, Gabriel Cadieux, 14, Fia Diorio, 12, Evan Kilroy, 17, Ayden Michaud, 15, and Jenna Wall, 15. Wall broke the club record for her performance in the 50m Breast event and competed last week at the 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Toronto.

Thunderbird swimmers earning top three placements were Sophie Durocher, 11, Ashley Girard, 18, Jesse Hammond, 18, Sheldon Kilroy, 15, Emilia Lainevool, 15, Brody Marietti, 15, Madilyn Reaume, 12, and Gavin Wall, 13.

Top eight achievements were handed out to Timothy Corbeil, 13, Samuel Denomme, 15, Grace Hong, 13, Annika Lainevool, 14, Meghan Norman, 15, Cole Paralovos, 17, Jaiden Paralovos, 15, Peyton Paralovos, 13, and Isabella Trottier, 10.

Most CT33 Thunderbird swimmers earned personal best times at the event with special mention to Myles Denomme, 12, Noah Papatheodorou, 15, Ryleigh Paralovos, 11, and Madeline Tanner, 17.

The club continues to train with several events happening in April. Thunderbirds will be competing locally at the North Bay Y Invitational Meet April 12th-14th, hosted by the North Bay Y Titans. Qualifying swimmers will be competing at the 2019 Speedo Eastern Canadian Championships April 11-14th and the Team Challenge in Markham April 26th to 28th.

North Bay coaches Pierre Simard, Penny Lecour, Hillar Lainevool, and Elle Louise George said they were pleased with the results from the meet and the success and growth of all swimmers.
