Thunderbirds fly at regional swim meet

Twenty members of the CFB North Bay Thunderbirds Swim Club recently competed in the Dave Kensit Memorial Regional Short Course Championship in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario placing 6th with 438 points.

Seven T-Birds swimmers excelled at the meet earning medals, points and new records. 12 Year old Bryanna Penno earned 5 gold medals, 1 silver medal, 5 personal best times and placed 2nd in the 11-12 high point totals with 52 points and along the way set a new regional record. Bryanna broke the 1999 North Eastern Ontario Regional Short Course record in 50 meter Breaststroke with her time of 37.90. The previous record was 38.31. The other top 11-12 Girl from the team was Emma Hives, 12, who earned 2 gold medals, 3 bronze medals, a 4th and 5th, 7 personal best times and was 4th in the 11-12 high point totals with 45 points. In the Girls 10 & under category there were 3 swimmers who stood out. 10 year old Sierra McCourt earned 3 gold medals and 4 silver medals, 7 personal best times and was 2nd in 10 & under high point totals with 55 points. Vendela Edmunds, 10, earned a silver medal, 5th and 6th place ribbons, 5 personal best times and 14 points, while 8 year old Jesse Hives earned 2 bronze medals, 4th, 5th, and two 6th place ribbons, 6 personal best times and 27 points. In the girls 15 and over category, 15 year old Jennifer Piper earned 2 gold medals, 3 silver medals, two 5th place ribbons and was 3rd in the 15 & over high point totals with 47 points. In the Boys categories, 13 year old Andrew Palangio earned 1 gold medal, 4 silver medals, two 4th place ribbons, 5 personal best times and was 4th in the Boys 12-13 high point totals with 47 points.

The girls 10 & under Free Relay earned gold while the 200 Medley Relay earned silver. The girls 11-12 Free and medley relays earned bronze medals and the 13-14 girls medley relay earned an 8th place ribbon. The girls 15 and over free and medley relay earned 4th place ribbons while the boys 12-13 free and medley relays were 6th.

Four T-Birds swimmers earned the right to swim in the Dave Kensit Senior Championship which was for the fastest 16 male and female swimmers in each stroke. Jennifer Piper swam to gold in the Women’s 50 free, silver in 200 free and 50 butterfly, bronze in 100 freestyle, 4th in 50 backstroke and 100 butterfly and 6th in 400 freestyle earning 125 points. Andrew Palangio was 6th in 400 metre Individual Medley, 8th in 200 Butterfly, 10th in 50 butterfly, 11th in 100 butterfly and 13th in 200metre Individual Medley earning 39 points in the Men’s Top Sixteen. Landra Lecour 17 was 12th in 50 Breaststroke and 13th in 50 Backstroke in the Women’s group earning 9 points while Dylan Jackson was 14th in 50 Breaststroke in the Men’s group earning 3 points.

Several Thunderbird swimmers are in action this month, Jennifer Piper at the Eastern National Championships in Brantford, Bryanna Penno at the Junior Provincials in Napean and numerous team members at the Dinan Insurance Invitational in Valley East.
