Local cyclist Brett Stoppa is home from a successful Ontario Summer Games in London.

Brett competed in the Road Cycling events and won bronze in the team time trial, placed 4th in the road race and 6th in the points criterium.

In the road race, Brett established a breakaway with three other riders and 18km to go. The breakaway finished the race with over two minutes ahead of the main group. Brett attacked the breakaway with 500 metres to go and was caught at the finish line. First to fourth place were all within a bike length apart crossing the finish line during the tight finish.

A successful Summer Games didn’t happen by chance. Brett races with the OBC Junior Race Team out of Ottawa and is coached by Shawn Clarke. Prior to these London games, Brett and his OBC team competed in the Tour d’Abitibi - an international seven-day stage race covering over 700km against teams from as far away as New Zealand, France, Japan and the US. Successful racing at this level means finishing every stage and making the time limits each day. 150 riders started the event and just under100 racers crossed the finish line on the last day. The Tour d’Abitibi is sanctioned by UCI and is a race for athletes ages 17 and 18.

Leading up to the Tour d’Abitibi, Brett competed in many races including Canadian Championships in Saugenay, Quebec, Charlevoix stage race, and other races in the Ottawa area.

During the winter, Brett races in the velodrome at Milton.
