The surging Powassan Voodoos got a hat trick from Jake Staples as they reeled off their seventh consecutive win to start the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League season Friday as they dropped the Espanola Express 9-3 at the Regional Recreation Complex.

Daniel Golba put the Voodoos in front with a shorthanded effort at 13:23 only to see Espanola tie it 36 seconds later on Tyler Wicks first NOJHL goal.

Michael Silveri put Powassan back in front at 15:30 with his second of the campaign.

The visitors added to their lead with three unanswered markers in the middle frame in quick order thanks to Nathaniel McLeod and a pair by Staples.

Tyler Peters made it 6-1 three minutes into the final stanza while Staples capped off his three-goal night at 8:25.

Eric Nagy then notched his first of the season for the Voodoos 33 seconds later as the Voodoos took total control of the contest.

The Express answered with a couple of tallies from newcomer Aaron Beauchamp and Jason Bednarski before McKenzie Gray knocked in his first NOJHL goal on a late power play for the Voodoos to round of the scoring.

Mario Cavaliere made 32 saves to register the win for Powassan.

J.P. Sabourin started for Espanola and suffered the loss while Mitchell Jones came in midway through the game as the Express duo faced 42 shots in defeat.

The Voodoos, who are ranked 11th in the CJHL national rankings, will be back on home ice next Friday when they face the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.
