Canoe race July 4

The seventh annual Great Northern Canoe Race will be held Sunday July 4 on Trout Lake.

The exciting and challenging race begins and ends at Olmsted Beach, site of the North Bay Canoe Club.

C1 and C2 racing canoes will cover a 22km route with three portages.

The recreational canoes will race 14 km and two portages.

Race souvenirs will be given to the top three finishers in each division and other prizes will also be awarded.

The start of the race is a Le Mann’s style where the canoes are placed at the water’s edge and the racers line up 75 metres back. At the sound of the starting gun, everyone runs to this or her canoe and the race is on.

The Blue Sky paddlers encourage anyone and everyone to come out and take part.

Registration takes place at the North Bay Canoe Club from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. Registration is $15 per paddler. Awards will be presented after the race. GNCR T-shirts will also be available for $10.

The Ontario Marathon Canoe Racing Association sanctions the race.
