Spartans U17 girls win in Newmarket

The North Bay Spartans Girls U17 were crowned champions of the IEM Newmarket Basketball Tournament this past weekend.  

They downed the Whitby Gladiators 61-51 in the Gold Medal game.  

Miranda Bilton was the top scorer in the game with 21, while Brooke Shogren and Zenna Hilliard respectively added 13 and 9 points.

Earlier in round robin play, the Spartans also defeated the Gladiators by a score of 62-46.  Shay Bartraw was the offensive leader with 16 points while Shogren added 14.

“The girls were engaged and enthusiastic throughout the tournament,” said Spartans Head Coach Tim Lowe.  

“It’s nice to see the girls come together as a team since they all come from different high school teams.  Their energy and tenacity made it fun to watch them.” 

In the Semi-Final game, the Spartans defeated the Lindsay Wildcats  44-29, with Shogren and Bilton once again leading the charge offensively with 11 and 10 points each. 

In their other round-robin games, they defeated the Midland Mystics 51-20.  

Mélina Levasseur was the top point getter for the Spartans with 13, including 3 three-pointers.  They also defeated the South Windsor Warriors 65-16.

This was their 2nd tournament of the year and have run their season record to 7 wins and 2 losses.

Team members are: Zenna Hilliard, Renée Gallagher, Miranda Bilton, Ellie Horning, Samantha Adams, Tessa Tignanelli, Brooke Shogren, Abbi Palcik, Molly Pitkethly, Shay Bartraw, Mélina Levasseur and Dominique Baldasaro.  Coaches are Mat Sneddon, Tyson Brear and Tim Lowe.
