Solid effort by Thunderbirds swimmers in the Soo

The CT33 Thunderbirds competed at the Dave Kensit Memorial Championship at the John Rhodes Community Centre in Sault Ste. Marie last weekend. This Swim Ontario sanctioned event was hosted by the Sault Surge Aquatic Team.

This short course regional championship draws the top Northeastern Ontario competitive swimmers that meet the qualifying standard for the event. The purpose of the meet is to help swimmers prepare for Festivals, and other Provincial Championships. Thirty-three CT33 Thunderbird Swim Team members met the prescribed standards and traveled to Sault Ste. Marie to compete.

Seven teams from across the province attended the event.

Owen Baas, 10, captured first place finishes in all seven of his events earning him the High Point Award for his age category. Baas also broke three club records in the 50 metre Butterfly, 200m Medley and 400m free events.

Jenna Wall, 15, broke 2 club records in the 100m and 200m Breastroke events.

Other swimmers achieving first place finishes were Albert Bouley, 12, Trael Daly Stevens, 16, Fia Diorio, 12, Evan Kilroy, 17 and Sheldon Kilroy, 14.

Top three finishes were earned by Gabriel Cadieux, 14, Samuel Denomme, 15, Jesse Hammond, 18, Emilia Lainevool, 15, Jaiden Paralovos, 14, Madilyn Reaume, 11, Isabella Trottier, 10 and Jenna Wall, 15.

Thunderbird swimmers finishing in the top eight were Robby Baas, 11, Timothy Corbeil, 13, Sydney Doidge, 14, Sophie Durocher, 11, Grace Hone, 13, Brody Marietti, 15, Ayden Michaud, 15, Jillian O’Donnell, 16, Noah Papatheodorou, 15, Peyton Paralovos, 13, Ryleigh Paralovos, 11, and Gavin Wall, 13.  

Personal best times were recorded for CT33 swimmers at the event with special mention to Abigail Betsill, 11, Leah Chirico, 16, Ashley Girard, 18, Meghan Norman, 15, Cole Paralovos, 17, Katie Sefton, 15, and Madeline Tanner, 17.

The CT33 Thunderbird relay teams competed in twenty events earning top three finishes in eleven. The men’s 15 and over relay team consisting of Jessie Hammond, Evan Kilroy, Cole Paralovos and Trael Daly Stevens broke the club record in the 200m Medley event.

CT33 Thunderbirds continue to train and compete. Fia Diorio, Owen Baas and Robby Baas will be competing at the 2019 Ontario Winter Festival Championships February 16-17 at the Etobicoke Olympium Pool. February 18

th to March 3rd Jenna Wall, Trael Daly Stevens, Samuel Denomme and Evan Kilroy will be competing at the 2019 Spring Ontario Swimming Champs. Thunderbirds Ayden Michaud, Jenna Wall, Sam Denomme, Jesse Hammond, Evan Kilroy and Sheldon Kilroy will be competing at the 2019 Ontario Youth-Junior Champs – Sprint from March 7th to 10th to be held at the Markham Pan Am Pool.

North Bay coaches Pierre Simard, Penny Lecour, Hillar Lainevool, and Elle Louise George said they were pleased with the results from the meet and the success and growth of all swimmers.
