Skyhawks defeat Blues 5-2 (new)

The Skyhawks are members of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League while the Blues play out of the Provincial Ontario Junior A Hockey League.

Yves Bastien, a highly touted rookie who played last season with Onaping Falls Huskies in the Northern Ontario Bantam Hockey League, had a pair of goals.

Bastien, a 15-year-old centreman, was the bantam league’s top scorer last season with 26 goals and 23 assists in 34 games and was named the most valuable player. It marked the fourth time in league history that a player won both the league’s scoring title and most valuable player award.

Dave Dupuis and Nathan Hewitt had the other goals.

Matt Collins chipped in with three assists.

Stuart Frickle started in goal for the Skyhawks and stopped all 14 shots directed his way. Daniel Manoccia allowed two goals on 12 shots as the Skyhawks outshot the Blues 35-26.

Randy McIntyre and Kyle Begley had the goals for the Blues.

Hewitt’s goal came on a powerplay as the Skyhawks went 1-6 with a man advantage. The Blues were 0-for-8.
