Dudley Hewitt Cup

Fort William North Stars 8
North Bay Skyhawks 2
final

The Skyhawks got behind early and couldn't find a way to claw back and find a way to keep their season going for another day.

For the second straight game, the North Bay Skyhawks allowed a goal in the first minute of action. Joey Nigro scored 11 seconds into Thursday's afternoon affair to give the Fort William North Stars a very early 1-0 lead. The Skyhawks needed a victory Thursday afternoon or they would be heading back on the bus without an invitation to Friday's Dudley-Hewitt Cup semi-final.

The North Stars continued to score early and often as Sean Trevissanutto added another goal at the 2:34 mark of the first period to give the Thunder Bay club a 2-0 lead as Skyhawks Goalie Chris Abbey, who turned aside 73 of 77 shots Wednesday night, allowed 2 goals on the first 3 shots he faced.

Former North Bay Centennial Adam Fabiano increased the North Stars lead to three as the North Stars scored their third first period goal just past the halfway point of the opening frame.

The penalty box was a busy place in the first period as 12 penalties were called by referee Terry Hobor.

Brent Irwin made it 4-0 North Stars early in the second but the Skyhawks closed the gap slighly with a goal 27 seconds later by forward Chase Gallacher to make it 4-1.

The North Stars rebounded and really started to pull away a few minutes later as the Stars scored 3 goals in a span of 6 minutes to make the score 7-1.

David Frawley scored his second of the tournament at 11:18 to make it 7-2 for the North Stars.

The North Stars added another goal to their lofty lead as Steve Atkins added his second goal of the game to make it 8-2.

The Skyhawks were awful on special teams going 0 for 11 on the powerplay and allowing 3 goals on 6 man advantage chances for the North Stars.

For Captian David Frawley, who's the only Skyhawk to play in all three Dudley-Hewitt Cup tournaments for the blue and white the past three seasons, it's a disappointing end to a very memorable junior career with the Skyhawks.

"It was a tough game, everybody battled hard, but we knew after last night's game it was going to be hard to come back today, but we played our hearts out," said Frawley in a phone interview with BayToday.ca after the game.

"They came out hard, we tried our best and they got some good bounces early," he added about the quick lead the North Stars broke out to in the first period.

While 8 goals beat Chris Abbey and Mike Lalande, Frawley doesn't blame the netminders for the lopsided loss.

"Both Abbey and Lalande played great," Frawley said about the goalies. Abbey was replaced by Lalande in the final period when the score was 7-2.

The Skyhawks finish the round robin portion of the Dudley-Hewitt Cup tournament with a 0-3 record and last in the four team event. The Skyhawks had reached the final in their last two tournaments, two years ago in Fort Frances, and last year in North Bay.

The Skyhawks will stay the night in Georgetown and will make their way back home tomorrow as they expect to be back in North Bay around 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
