Sens re-assign Paul; Goodrow fighting to keep his job

The Ottawa Senators cut their roster by seven players on Wednesday including former Battalion forward Nick Paul.

The 2015 Team Canada World Junior Gold Medallist has been sent to the Senators affiliate AHL team in Binghampton.

“I don’t want to get too confident here. Any day you can go home. Every day (the) goal is to be (the) best I can on the ice and see where it takes me,” Paul said earlier in training camp.

Meantime, former Battalion Captain Barclay Goodrow’s spot with the San Jose Sharks may be at risk.

Goodrow, who was signed as a free agent by the Sharks in March of 2014, surprised many by making the Sharks regular season roster last fall.

However, in the off-season the Sharks changed their coach; out was Todd McLellan and in is Pete DeBoer.

The Sharks also added more depth up front with the additions of free agent Finnish forward Joonas Donskoi, plus the return of injured forwards Mike Brown and another Battalion alum in Raffi Torres.

“It’s not hard to look at it and see that there’s too many guys out there,” Goodrow told the gaklereport.com.

“It’s something that’s a good challenge to have. It’s kind of the same spot I was in last year, so hopefully I can use what I learned last year to overcome it.”

If he was reassigned, he wouldn’t be too far from home as the Sharks new affiliate team is based in San Jose as the 2015-16 season will be the first AHL year for the San Jose Barracudas.

While Goodrow is determined to make the roster, he realizes that he could be pushed out, which would mean starting the season in the AHL.

But as an undrafted player who’s already beat the odds once, Goodrow knows that opportunity is always right around the corner.

“If I do get sent down to the AHL, I’ll have to tweak my game a bit, get better and work my way back up,” Goodrow told the gaklereport.com
