North Bay’s Colton Point turned away 21 of 27 shots in his first NHL pre-season start as the Dallas Stars dropped a 6-5 decision at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on Sunday evening.

Jim Montgomery, the Stars rookie head coach, came to the defence of his goaltender as he said he liked the Stars offence but did not like his team’s defensive game.

"I feel bad for Colton Point because we were too loose in the D-zone," Montgomery said post game to Dallasstars.com.

"They had too much time, and they shot a lot of pucks from the point, and they had a real good net-front presence. We weren't boxing out. We didn't help him. One was knocked out of the air, two off bodies and the power-play goals, I didn't think he had a chance on."

The Avalanche got to Point early, as they notched a pair of first period power play markers off the sticks of Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen.

Tyson Barrie beat Point late in the first period off a blast from the point which made it 3-2 Avalanche.

Point made a big shorthanded breakaway stop on Matt Calvert who tried to deke around the big North Bay netminder who stretched out his right pad to keep the puck out.

Just about five minutes into the second period Landeskog tipped in his second of the game off a Patrik Nemeth shot.   Late in the second Point was unable to stop Colin Wilson, who beat Point on a breakaway which made it 5-3 Avs.

Former Stars prospect Sheldon Dries tallied to extend the Avalanche lead to 6-3 at 5:15 of the third.

Point was called into action Sunday as the Stars rested Ben Bishop and Anton Khudobin for their final pre-season game.  Point, who was backed up by Landon Bow, is expected to team up with Bow with the Stars AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars who play in nearby Austin, Texas.
