A dominating no-hit performance by Leigh Anne Taylor of the Canadore College Lady Panthers (North Bay) earned the right-hander female athlete of the week honours in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.

Taylor struck out 12 batters and walked two as the Panthers defeated the Cambrian College Golden Shield (Sudbury) 2-0 last week.

The Panthers, 1-4 on the season, are back in action this weekend as they host Conestoga Condors (Kitchener) at Kelly Field Saturday in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Around the diamond this past week, the two-time defending OCAA champion Durham Lords (Oshawa) didn’t miss a beat during the off-season as they went 3-0, not giving up a single run.

Last year’s OCAA championship top pitcher and MVP, Erin Smith, is already in midseason form as she recorded two shutout victories and led the offensive assault, going 3 for 10 with three runs scored and four RBI’s. Teammate Lenna Panou also was swinging a hot bat, as she went 4 for 9 with three runs scored and four RBI’s over three games.

Not to be outdone, the Mohawk Mountaineers (Hamilton) also started the season out perfect, going 2-0. The team’s top hurler, Lacey Hill picked up both victories including a four-hit shutout. In Mohawk’s first game, teammate Kelly Fazekas went 3 for 4 with two RBI’s and in the second game, Pam Cassano went 2 for 3 with one run scored and three RBI’s.

The Conestoga Condors (Kitchener) played .500 ball this past week, as they went 2-2. Starting pitchers, Mellissa Prior and Kristine Koning picked up the victories, including Koning throwing a complete game two-hitter. They also contributed behind the plate, as Koning went 3 for 4 with one run scored in their first victory and Prior batted 1 for 3 with one run scored in Conestoga’s second win.
