Normally when you almost double a team in shots, take one minor penalty and use your speed for 60 minutes, you come away with a win.

That wasn’t the case – somehow – for the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team Saturday as they hosted the Queens Gaels in their annual Pink The Rink game, sponsored by Scotiabank.

The Lakers finished with one penalty, 50 shots, but were on the wrong end of a 4-2 decision thanks to two third period goals from the Gaels.

The lone goal of the first period went to the Gaels, as they opened the scoring and took a 1-0 lead to the dressing room at the intermission despite being outshot 15-11.

Joel Herbert tied the game in the second, but playing even was short-lived, as Queens regained their lead shortly after and had the advantage once again.

But the Lakers refused to quit, as Jacob Conrad made it 2-2 after a scramble in front.

Conrad managed to chip the puck into the open net, as multiple players piled into the blue paint.

Steven Deeg, Chad Thibodeau and Jimmy McDowell all earned nice assists on the two Lakers goals that had the teams even after 40 minutes of play.

The only two goals in the final frame came from the Gaels, as they escaped North Bay with two points and a bit of revenge after Nipissing defeated them at home last weekend.

Nipissing dominated in the shot department, firing 50 at Gaels goalie Jacob Brennan, who finished with 48 saves.

Domenic Graham was good, but takes the loss after make 22 saves on the night.

The Lakers will host Laurentian in a mid-week game, as the Vees come to town Wednesday night.
