It’s been a whirlwind of a start to the 2015-16 season for Colton Point.

In his first year of Junior ‘A’ Hockey, NHL scouts are taking notice as the North Bay Midget AAA Trappers graduate has been rated as a ‘C’ prospect for the upcoming 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the NHL Central Scouting which was released this week.

A “C” ranking is a player projected to be taken from the fourth to sixth round of the upcoming draft.

The North Bay product signed in the off-season with the Carleton Place Canadians of the CCHL, which was a big move and change of focus.  Signing with Carleton Place essentially closed the door on Major Junior Hockey for Point, who was a 2014 14th round pick of the Erie Otters.

The 6’3”, 220 pound netminder is off to a great start statistically as he has a 12-1 record with the 2015 RBC Cup finalists along with a stingy 2.51 goals against average.

Point also received a NCAA Division I commitment from Colgate for the 2017 season.  He was also named to a CCHL All-star squad for the recent Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge which was held last week in Cornwall.

107 saves made scouts take notice

Point really started making waves last season when he attracted national media attention after an amazing 107 save playoff victory last February against the Sault Ste. Marie Thunderbirds in the Great North Midget League semi-finals.

Last spring, the former Chippewa Senior Secondary student also got into some junior ‘A’ action as an affiliate goalie with the Powassan Voodoos as he got into a pair of playoff games during the Voodoos semi-final series against the Cochrane Crunch.

North Bay has had some great news for the goaltending fraternity lately, as back in early September the New Jersey Devils signed undrafted Oshawa Generals goalie Kenny Appleby to an entry level contract.

Appleby has split time this fall between the Devils AHL and ECHL affiliates in Albany and Adirondack.
