Brett Stoppa’s more than 350 kilometres of cycling a week this summer appeared to have paid off at the Ontario Summer Games.

The 15-year-old North Bay teen is just starting to get into competitive cycling, finished sixth in the U15 Cycling Road race held in Mississauga on August 13th.

The Chippewa student races out of a club in Ottawa called the West of Quebec Wheelers.

Stoppa has come a long way this year.  Locally, he trains with his father and former road racer Kevin Stoppa along with other local riders like Jenn Ryan, Dave Henschel, Josh Witt, Patrice Gravelle and Kevin Wright to name a few - most with triathlete backgrounds.

“They are a good core group that likes to ride fast locally and they are pushing Brett,” said Brett’s father Kevin.

The young Stoppa is hoping to build on the Ontario Summer Games success.

He will be riding in a race from Parliament Hill to Montreal for what will likely be his last race of the year.

Brett has also raced in a couple of races in Quebec this summer and his father has seen the improvements.

“You could see his progression where he’s becoming more of a participant, he’s racing,” said Kevin Stoppa.
