North Bay Nordic skier wins bronze in Quebec

Gatineau Quebec - The Ontario Nordic Cup Series continued this past weekend, and North Bay Nordic Junior Racing Team veteran skier Jesse Winter once again earned a spot on the medal podium.

Gatineau Quebec - The Ontario Nordic Cup Series continued this past weekend, and North Bay Nordic Junior Racing Team veteran skier Jesse Winter once again earned a spot on the medal podium.

The Ontario Cup race combined forces with the Quebec Cup series to feature the Eastern Canadians. It also was part of the Haywood NorAm Canada Cup circuit and attracted most senior and junior national team members as well as top western Canadian skiers not presently competing in Europe. More than 500 skiers competed at the event that clearly sets the stage for the nationals this coming spring in Prince George, B.C..

Two events were held on the weekend, the classic race on Saturday and the free-style competition on Sunday.

On the medal podium for North Bay was seasoned skier Jesse Winter with a bronze medal. Kaytlyn Faucon and Jacob Porter also displayed solid performances by placing among the top six in their categories.

In the Junior Boy's 10 km free-style race Jesse Winter put in a solid performance from start to finish to earn a bronze medal in 18:54, 19 seconds behind Harry Seaton of Team Hardwood. Michael Somppi of Thunder Bay took the silver medal in 18:38. Winter also put in a solid performance during the 7.75 KM classic race. Winter completed the course in 6th place with a time of 22:19. Anthony Gavin of Skibec won the race in 22:05. David Weskopf of the North Bay squad completed the free-style race in 16th spot with a time of 19:33 and the classic race in 19th position in 23:22. .

In the Juvenile Boys category, first year member Jake Porter was the top performer with an 6th place finish in the 7.5 km free-style race, 27 seconds behind the race leader Luke Vilakainen of Thunder Bay. Porter also put in a solid performance in the 5 KM classic race with an 11th place finish in 15:49. Scott Sullivan of Thunder Bay won that event in 14:43. Other North Bay Juveniles Boys with respectable free-style finishes are Zale Apramian in 20th in 20:55, Jonathon Winter 45th in 22:25 and Brenton Farintosh 48th in 22:41. In the Classic race Apramian placed 42nd in 17:32, Winter 51st in 18:21 and Farintosh 56th in 19:53.

Kaytlyn Faucon put in an awesome performance with a sixth place finish in the Juvenile Girls 5 KM free-style race with a time of 15:41, but fell to 24th position in the 5KM classic race. Faucon's classic time was 19:32. Samantha Odrowski continues to improve as the season progresses. Owdrowski placed24th in the free-style race with a time of 16:56 and 36th in classic race in 20:25.

Ava Rudachyk of the North Bay squad also performed well. Rudachyk placed 16th, in the 5 km free-style race with a time of 16:01and 21st in the 5 km classic race 19:53.

Ezekiel Williams a mini-midget boy raced up in the midget category and once again put in strong performances against his senior counterparts in both the 3.75 km free-style and classic events. Williams placed 16th in free-style with a time of 12:50 and 22nd classic race in 15:53.

Points from the Ontario Cup Series will be used to define the provincial team that will be selected to attend the nationals this coming spring in Prince George, B.C..
