North Bay Canoe Club Annual Regatta hosts 275 athletes from across Ontario

Events include races in canoe and kayak in singles as well as crew boats of 2 or 4 paddlers.  Distances are from 200 metres to 1000 metres

275 Athletes from across Ontario accompanied by coaches, parents and friends attended the North Bay Canoe Club Regatta at Olmsted Beach on Trout Lake held July 20 and 21.

Ten Canoe Clubs competed on the weekend, including Rideau, Carleton Place, Ottawa River, Petrie Island and Sydenham Lake and North Bay from CanoeKayak Canada’s (CKC) Eastern Ontario Division (EOD) along with Western Ontario Division (WOD) clubs Mississauga, Pickering Rouge, Ak-O-Mak and Sudbury.  For athletes under 14, this is the only regatta where EOD and WOD clubs see each other in competition before the Ontario Provincial Championships later this summer at Rideau Canoe Club.

Racing over the weekend was planned to match upcoming events in preparation to qualify for Provincial and National Championships.  Older athletes, U16 and up raced on the 2nd day of competition.  As a warm-up to the upcoming qualifying regattas for the National Championships, North Bay’s regatta used the same distances that will be raced at Nationals in Regina, Saskatchewan this year.

Events include races in canoe and kayak in singles as well as crew boats of 2 or 4 paddlers.  Distances are from 200 metres to 1000 metres.  An exciting and uniquely Canadian event is the C15 races, commonly known as War Canoe with crews of 14 paddlers and a cox.

One of the key reasons for choosing North Bay to host this regatta with Province-wide participation is access to a 1000m course, one of only a few available in Ontario.

The North Bay Canoe Club posted some excellent results.  Despite fielding a small number of athletes compared to other clubs, North Bay placed 4th out of 10 clubs in the U10-U14 events, and 7th in U16 and up events.

Upcoming regattas are the National Qualifiers at Rideau Canoe Club this weekend, EOD Championships on Aug 10-11, Ontario Provincial Championships Aug 17-18 and CKC National Championships Aug 27-31.
