This feisty inline hockey team moved into the AAA Division this past weekend in Brantford and at the end of it all, they defeated the Burlington Wave in an overtime nail biter. Tied 7-7 after regulation play, it was not long
before Nipissing’s Ken Peroff intercepted a loose puck along the boards, drove to the net and lifted the puck into the twine behind the Burlington netminder.

The 8-7 victory in the final game capped off a perfect weekend which saw the Nipissing 14’s going undefeated in their preliminary round. Nipissing had tied Burlington in the round robin play. Burlington was ranked number one
going into the weekend, after they captured a couple of local AAA crowns and were the Can Am Cup AAA winners.

Co-coached by Greg Theberge and Norm Marion , the Nipissing 14s had other major tournament wins during their quest for the provincial title this year including, the Can Am Cup AA title two weeks earlier in London.

“We knew that in order to be successful we had to rely on more than just our talent” said coach Marion.

“There was outstanding talent on every team and it came down to our boys wanting to win more than the next guy.”

Coach Theberge said “I could see the potential in this team increase with every game played. The players were winning the races to the puck and they had an urgency in their play. These inline hockey players worked hard all season for the team and made each of the communities in the region
proud”.

The team is made up of players from all over the Blue Sky region and include: Brett Theberge from Sundridge, Ken Peroff from Chisholm, Jordyn Vaillancourt from Bonfield, Devon Church, Chris Fraser, Camil Gaudette, Michael McCrudden and Josh McKenny from North Bay, Patrick Seguin and Pierre Seguin from West Nipissing and Joseph Turner from Corbeil.

The Under 11 Black Knights were Silver Medalists in the 12 & Under A Division. This youthful squad had a strong weekend but in the end could not hold on and lost in the finals to Georgetown 5-4. Coach Mark Kosturik was
happy with the result.

“This team will be at the top next season and we learned so much this past weekend in Brantford” he said.

“It was an entertaining weekend watching both Nipissing teams and the kids can’t wait for next season”.

Nipissing Inline manager Susan Church said “ Clearly , the support from the Under 11’s was a factor in the Gold Medal win for the 14’s. In the semi final game, the 14’s fell behind 2-0 against London. The younger team showed up and with their enthusiasm and support, it gave the 14’s the boost they needed to succeed. They heard the cheering and then managed to turn the game around and secured the win”.

Playing for the Nipissing 11’s are Eric Bouchard, Tanner Davis, TaylorDavis, Michel Dumont, Matthew Gerolami, Kevin Kosturik, Tyler Miller, Scott Pawson, Pascal Seguin, Andrew Willis. Members of the club not able to make the trip were Dakota Barnhardt, Eric Langford, Tyler Poeta and Patrick
Rochefort.

The Nipissing Inline League has a lot to be proud of this season. Ten members of the league were chosen to represent Canada at the recent World Inline Cup held in London Ontario.

Playing for the Team Ontario 10 was Caleb Cameron who captured gold. On Team Ontario 11 were Michel Dumont and Brian Lawson ,while Pascal Seguin was with the 11 selects. Team Ontario 14 had Camil Gaudette, Josh McKenny, Ken Peroff
and Brett Theberge and brought home the silver. Greg Theberge was coaching the 14 Ontario Squad. Gold Medal winning Team Ontario 15 were supported by Marc Senecal and Darcy Vaillancourt.

The governing body of the inline sport in Canada is Canada Inline. They want to hold the provincial competition in North Bay next year. Such an event would bring nearly 600 families into the region for a weekend event.

This weekend, the Nipissing Inline Hockey League wraps up their season with their end of season tournament at the West Ferris Arena. The tournament goes all weekend and the public is welcome to come out and watch some great hockey.
