NDA athletes shine in cross-country races (new)

Gawinski, a Grade 12 student, added the Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics senior girls title to her accomplishments, winning the 5 km race with a time of 18 minutes, 28.41 seconds.

Kristen Johnson of Sir James Dunn in the Sault was a close second in 18:29.50.

The West Ferris Secondary School boys came up big, winning the junior and senior team titles and the boys aggregate title with 20 points.

Sir James Dunn won the overall aggregate with 42 points including the senior girls title with 26 points.

The placings of the top four runners from each school were used to determine team results.

The WSS senior girls team just missed out on the title as they finished second with 39 accumulated points to 38 for Sir James Dunn.

In senior boys, Kyle Caverson of Lockerby won the 7km race in 23:13.6.

Darren Pratt of WFSS was the top NDA finisher placing fourth in 24:01.73.

Marc Andre Paulin of Ecole Secondaire Catholique Algonquin was fifth in 24:08.78.

Other WF team members were Joshua Ranger, sixth, 24:17.32; Alex Christie, 18th, 25:12.45; Neil Isenegger, 24th, 25:33.91; Brenden Wendover, 33rd, 26:40.24; Tyler White, 53rd, 27:47.88; Adam Despres, 57th, 27:58.79; Grant Butterworth, 61st, 28:10.67 and Brendan Wood, 70th, 28:49.30.

St. Joseph-Scollard Hall was fourth with 88 points and Chippewa Secondary School was fifth with 120 points.

Leesa Church of Widdifield was sixth in the senior girls race in 18:49.43, Keira Brown, 11th, 19:31.68; Courtney Holmes, 21st, 20:29.06 and Carlie Penney, 22:00.59.

Chippewa was fifth with 91 points and Kelly Miller was the top runner, placing fourth in 18:40.62.

Reg Peer of Sir James Dunn edged out the Walters twins, Matt and Nick in the junior boys race.

Peer ran the 6km distance in 21:09.20. Matt was second in 21:10.01 and Nick was third in 21:12.58.

Other members of the West Ferris team: Shane Karn, 10th, 22:37.96; Jeffrey McLellan, 30th, 24:35.35 and Joe Turner, 58th, 29:02.85.

Chippewa was third in the junior girls team standings with 80 points and Widdifield had 99.

Heather Cobbledick of WSS was sixth in 15:33.01 for the 4km race.

Lindi Spilchen of CSS was 13th in 16:05.17.

In midget girls, Rise Erin Stokes of SJ-SH was fifth in 12:23.59 for the 3km race.

In midget boys, Widdifield was second in team standings with 88 points and Chippewa was fourth with 107.

Alex Espinosa of CSS was fourth in the 5km run with a time of 16:50.00 and Mike McDougall of WSS was fifth in 17:10.66.
