If the pre-season was any indication, rookie Adam McMaster is going to be a player scouts are going to come and watch in the next few seasons.

The Battalion first round pick taken 13th overall in the OHL Priority Selection this past spring, led the Battalion attack in pre-season play with three goals and two assists totaling five points in four pre-season contests.

Despite the pre-season success, the 5’10”, 165 pound centre say he’s still trying to make the adjustment from minor midget to the OHL.

“A lot of guys are pushing each other around trying to - I won’t say hit to punish - but take away the puck with a little bit more force than in midget,” admitted McMaster.

“Slashing and hooking and more stick work here and they let it go so obviously you are going to have to toughen up to play in this league.”

The Battalion coaching staff is pleased with his progression and his pre-season output.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt from what we’ve seen he’s going to be an extremely talented player and is going to be a fan favourite with his skills,” noted Head Coach Stan Butler.

“Very few 16-year-old’s can come into this league and come out running, so I think the future is bright for this kid and I told him the other day in my meeting with him before the season that off the ice you've got to respect your position but on the ice be the player you can be.”

The humble yet articulate rookie appreciates the accolades but he’s trying take his rookie campaign in stride.

“I really don’t have any expectations on myself, I just like to go out there and do my best and I am a firm believer that everything else will take care of itself,” he said.

While many 16-year-old’s spend time in the press box or on the fourth line, this rookie wants to prove he can contribute now.

“I don’t think anyone wants to be on the fourth line,” said McMaster.

“Everyone wants to make an impact to the team and be the superstar like Crosby or Ovechkin and have all the attention on you but obviously coming with that comes a lot of pressure, I’m not saying I’m that person because I am obviously not, but I am here to make an impact and make an impression.”

McMaster and the Troops begin the season on Friday night when the Niagara IceDogs visit Memorial Gardens.  Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
