Mattawa-Bonfield to host National Canoe Championship

Mattawa-Bonfield, Ontario - The Canadian Marathon Canoe Racing Association has awarded the 2006 Championships to the Mattawa-Bonfield Region which will be held Wed – Fri, July 26 – 28, 2006.
Mattawa-Bonfield, Ontario - The Canadian Marathon Canoe Racing Association has awarded the 2006 Championships to the Mattawa-Bonfield Region which will be held Wed – Fri, July 26 – 28, 2006.

“This is great news as this event will bring national attention to the Mattawa- Bonfield Region. The importance is that this championship further promotes our Region as an outdoor adventure destination,” commented David Thompson, Mattawa Bonfield Economic Development Officer.

Ontario Marathon Canoe Race Association Executive Allyson MacDonald who made the Championship bid on behalf of the Ontario Marathon Canoe Association and the Mattawa Bonfield EDC to the National Executive was very excited to be bringing this event to the Mattawa Bonfield Region. She commented, “The first factor was that the Mattawa River Canoe Race is and has been the premier marathon race in the Ontario circuit. Secondly and thirdly, that the bid impressed the Council and that the Mattawa-Bonfield Region is centrally located in the country was a big plus.”

The historic Mattawa River will play host to this national canoeing event which will be a hosted in between two outdoor adventure events, the Lost in the Rocks and Trees Mountain Bike Enduro and the 30th Mattawa River Canoe Race.

“These outdoor events will also compliment Mattawa’s Voyageur Days and turn our popular outdoor festival into a 10 day event,” commented Jacques Begin, Co-chair of Voyageur Days.

“The planning begins today for next years National championship as we will be soliciting national and local sponsors and volunteers,” noted David Thompson, EDO.
