Local lifters show power at Provincials

Last weekend The Ontario Powerlifting Association held their Provincial Masters and Open Powerlifting Three Lift and Bench Press Championships in Bowmanville, Ontario.

The competition had an open division as well as masters age groups beginning at 40 plus. Over 225 lifters who had met the provincial qualifying standards came out to compete at the four day event. 

Valhalla club members reached Provincial and National records.

Jan Shulman set 3 provincial records en route to first place in the ladies M4 (70-79 years) 52kg division with lifts of 62.5kg, 42.5kg and 95kg for the squat, bench press and deadlift.

Tim Wilson won first place honours in the men's M1 (40-49 years) 120+kg category. The North Bay powerhouse, who set the provincial bench press record last year, broke the provincial squat record twice on Friday and had best lifts of 270kg, 172.5kg and 250kg.  

Kevin Ferris rose to the challenge winning bronze in the competitive 83kg M1 division with lifts of 177.5kg, 122.5kg and 217.5kg.

Scott Shulman placed 5th in the 93kg M1 group lifting 175kg, 115kg and 217.5kg. 

Attending his first provincials, Jake Beaton claimed first place in the para bench press 74kg division with a silky smooth 90kg press.

Other North Bay results were Popeye's and Ultimate Fitness lifter Jennifer McConnell winning gold in Thursday's open 63kg bench press competition pressing 75kg.  McConnell placed 5th in the 63kg 3 lift competition with lifts of 127.5kg, 75kg and 132.5kg.

Kim Crumpton continued her success with first place in both the ladies 57kg M3 (60-69 years) bench press and 3 lift competitions, lifting new national records along the way. Kim benched 52.5kg on Thursday and had lifts of 68kg, 52.5kg and 120kg Friday. 

Another North Bay lifter, Robert Truchon, won first place in the 93kg M1 bench press nailing 110kg.

The next major competition is the Canadian Powerlifting Union National Championships February 19th to 26th, 2018 in Calgary.
