This is another reminder to attend Sport North Bay’s first event of the fall season Wednesday night and gain some motivational strategies whether you are a coach, administrator, volunteer or interested person.

Dr. Garry Shulman, an experienced coach, author and teacher, has studied extensively about the importance of the mind in achieving goals for people, athletes and this community. He has made many presentations on this topic locally and internationally.

Now is the chance to come out and experience one of our local resources.

Dr. Shulman will talk about ‘Strengthening Communities Through Sport’ at the West Ferris Arena auditorium. Starting time for the night’s activities is 7 p.m.

Sporting organization executives, coaches, players, parents and officials are urged to attend.

As well, an update on the activities of Sport North Bay will be presented.

Sport North Bay was formed in April of this year. The association’s mission is to bring together schools, clubs, health, charitable, business and individual representatives dedicated to enhancing sport, recreation and healthy active living opportunities for all citizens of this community. Board members elected last April have been meeting since that time, putting a face to the objectives initially presented under the framework of the constitution.

The board members are Karen Cobb, chairman; Dave Saad, first vice chair; Heather Chambers, second vice chair; Peter Handley, treasurer; Jill Faulkner, secretary; and Fred Bailey, Glenn Cundari, Randy Edmonds, Paul Best and Allison Herst, directors. Sharon Kitlar, Manager Recreation and Leisure Services Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, is the city liaison, ex-officio member.

The next event for Sport North Bay is a panel scheduled for Oct. 6. The event is part of Caring Community Week.

Panel members so far are Coun. Dave Mendicino; Alison Herst, former Olympic athlete; Kelly Brown, Widdifield Secondary School principal; Dwight Anthony, coach and Suzanne Kaye, Big Sisters. Others will be added to the panel.

“Putting our children first should be a concern for all of us who want to see recreational participation levels rise and health and social issues fall,” said Cobb “Help support both these important events as we attempt to have the sporting community collaborate in a positive way.”
