Callander Culligan Lions put together some kind of season in the Women’s Gateway Major Fastball Association League.

The Lions lost their first game of the season, but then reeled off 20 straight wins including a title-clinching 7-1 victory over two-time defending champion Bonfield Near North Waste Systems Tuesday night at Amelia Park in front of more than 150 fans.

The Lions had an excellent defence and offence all season and never hurt themselves in either category.

Ann-Renee Guillemette was the winner in the championship final and fanned six, allowing six hits. At one point, Guillemette retired 13 batters in a row.

Sylvie Corbeil came on in relief in the top of the sixth inning with two out and the bases loaded when NNWS scored its only run. Corbeil gave up no hits and walked two batters in 1.1 innings of relief.

Lisa Hotte started for NNWS and went into the fifth before Monique Ferguson relieved her with nobody out. By that time, the Lions had a 6-0 lead.

Hotte gave up 10 hits and struck out four to take the loss. Ferguson didn’t allow any hits, but gave up one run in the sixth on two walks.

Corbeil, Cat Trudel, Tanya Bedard and Lauri Borden had two hits apiece for the Lions. One of Borden’s hits was a double.

Melissa Cross and Krystal Chartrand, double, had the other hits.

Fran Hotte had two singles for NNWS with Paula Morley, Lisa Hotte, Janelle Birtch, Monique Ferguson and Donna Murdoch adding singles.

The Lions finished with a 17-1 record in the regular season and 3-0 in the playoffs. Their lone loss was 10-2, their first game of the season to Partners/Assante/Wingate.

The league will wrap up the season with its annual awards night Thursday at Partners Billiards. Starting time is 6 p.m.
