Coming off a big win Friday, the first place Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team looked to make it a two-win weekend.

The Lakers hosted the Ryerson Rams Saturday night at Memorial Gardens in the second game of a four-game homestand, but came up short, losing 3-2 to the Rams.

Both teams had chances during the first 20 minutes, but the Rams struck first, scoring a power-play marker with under three minutes left in the period.

The shots favoured Ryerson as well, outshooting the Lakers 10-5 after one.

Nipissing got off to a strong start in the second period, as they peppered the net and rang two shots off the post early on, but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Lakers tied the game up with 6:57 left in the period after a great shift down low.

Victoria Quance was able to recover a loose puck and shovel a backhander upstairs to tie the game.

Brianna Gaffney picked up an assist on the goal that evened up the contest.

In the final minutes, the Rams regained the lead after a breakaway goal put them up 2-1 through 40 minutes.

Nipissing outshot Ryerson 10-9 in the period, but the Rams still had the advantage overall, 19-15 after two periods of play.

Ryerson added to their lead seven minutes into the third period off the rush and made it 3-1.

Just seconds after a 5-on-3 power play ended, the Lakers moved to within one thanks to a goal by Malory Dominico.

She one-timed a perfect pass by Maggie McKee to cut into the Rams lead and make it 3-2 in favour of Ryerson.

Unfortunately, that was as close as the Lakers would get and came up a goal short in the end.

Danika Ranger was back in net and made key saves at key times, finishing with 19 in the contest.

The final shots favoured Nipissing by a count of 28-22.

The Lakers remain at home for a pair of games next weekend when they host the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks Friday evening at 5pm and the Queens Gaels Saturday at 4:30pm.

Friday's game will be the annual Break The Ice on Mental Health event.

Both games will take place at Memorial Gardens.
