After a tough loss to start the weekend, the Nipissing Lakers women’s soccer team managed to earn a split on the road in Kingston.

Nipissing came up short Saturday, falling 2-1 to the Queens Gaels, before bouncing back and doubling up the RMC Paladins 4-2 Sunday afternoon.

In the weekend’s opening game, Madison Logan scored less than half an hour into the game, putting the Lakers up 1-0 on the Gaels.

Ashley Mlinaric earned the assist on the games’ opening goal.

Less than 10 minutes later, the Gaels tied things up and just after the clock hit the hour mark, Queens scored again to take the lead.

They would hold on for the remaining 30 minutes and come away with the victory and three points.

Lakers goalie Mykaela Volpe finished with three saves, while Nipissing converted on their only official shot on goal.

The second game of the weekend saw much more offence and a better result for the Lakers.

Once again, Logan opened up the scoring, this time just four minutes into the game giving Nipissing an early lead.

Cassidy Korhonen scored at the 16-minute mark and Sabrina Chabot added goals in the first half to put Nipissing up 3-0.

RMC replied with one of their own, sending the two teams to the halftime break with the Lakers lead 3-1.

Nipissing went up 4-1 when Lauren de Jong scored at the 50-minute mark.

RMC found the back of the net in the final minutes of the game, but it wasn’t enough, as Nipissing picked up a 4-2 win.

Volpe was in net once again, earning the victory in the contest.

The Lakers now return home for two games in North Bay.

They’ll host Ryerson Saturday and Toronto Sunday – both games starting at noon at Nipissing Field.
