The Nipissing Lakers volleyball squads have both cracked the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) national top ten rankings with the men sitting in sixth position while the women occupy eight spot.

The women’s team is currently sporting a 2-0 regular season record, ranked second in the OCAA and eight nationally. The Lakers have re-tooled this season with six new recruits joining the mix and the young team is deterrmined to work hard to achieve their goals.

An early match-up against their long time division rivals the Humber Hawks will certainly be a good test for squad. The home opener for the Lakers is set for November 11, 2012 beginning at noon as fans are encouraged to bring their pots and pans to the game.

In their only meeting thus far the Lakers dropped a narrow pair of matches to Humber at the Sheridan tournament held in mid October.

The Lakers men’s volleyball team is off to a great start dominating their opening games on the road against Niagara and Sheridan. Their impressive start has the Lakers ranked second in the OCAA and sixth nationally with an head to head match-up against the top ranked team in the country coming Sunday at 2 p.m. as the Lakers are set to make their 2012-13 home debut against the Humber Hawks.

The Lakers men’s program earned their first OCAA medal last season as they finished with a silver medal and the team is hungry for more. With the return of most of the 2011-12 line-up along with the addition of solid players such as Tom Podstawka, Mike Ballagh and Eric Girard the Lakers are in great position to accomplish their lofty goals.

These games will mark the end of an era as the Lakers and Hawks will play their final OCAA regular season match in North Bay as the Lakers volleyball teams will be making their OUA debut in 2013.
