The Nipissing Lakers Lakers men’s soccer team came up short Friday night, in their first meeting with rival, the Laurentian Voyageurs as they fell 2-0.

The Voyageurs scored a goal in each half and used some strong goaltending to keep the Lakers at bay and even up the Riley Gallo Cup and 705 Challenge Cup.

Both teams exchanged chances early in the game, but it was the Vees who struck first, scoring the eventual game-winner at the 28-minute mark.

Things would stay 1-0 in favour of Laurentian until late in the game when the Lakers pressured, but gave up a transition goal, putting it out of reach.

The Vees second tally came at the end of regulation time.

Final shots finished in favour of the Vees as well, but overall, the chances were pretty even.

The teams play the rematch Sunday afternoon in Sudbury.

Game time is set for 2:15 p.m.

Lakers women blank Vees

It’s early in the season, but the Nipissing Lakers women’s soccer team picked up a big win and three key points in the standings Friday night.

The Lakers edged their arch-rival Laurentian Voyageurs 1-0 in the first leg of the Riley Gallo Cup and the 705 Challenge Cup thanks to an early goal in the second half.

Nipissing now sits at 3-1-1 and has kicked off the season in style.

Andrea Young continued her hot start scoring the lone goal of the game at the 47-minute mark.

Madison Logan picked up the assist on the goal, as the team’s two top scorers combined to give Nipissing the victory.

From there, Nipissing held on to the lead and claimed the victory.

Mykaela Volpe was very good in net, recording another clean sheet, finishing with nine saves.

Nipissing will now head to Sudbury for the rematch on Sunday afternoon, as the northern rivalry continues.

Game time is set for noon at Laurentian University.
