The Nipissing Lakers varsity men's and women's teams both had splits in OUA soccer action on the road this weekend.
The Nipissing Lakers women’s soccer team rebounded from their first loss of the season this past weekend, as they earned a split in a pair of road games.
The Lakers dominated but came up short in Ottawa Saturday, losing 1-0 to the Carleton Ravens before moving on to Kingston where they cruised to a 4-0 victory over the RMC Paladins to wrap up the weekend.
Despite peppering the Ravens net with 10 shots, the Lakers were unable to capitalize and were held scoreless through 90 minutes.
The lone goal of the game came in the 63rd minute as the Ravens managed to beat Lakers goalkeeper Taylor Mitchener as they held on for the remaining half-hour to pick up the three points.
Nipissing was able to bounce back quickly after a tough loss, scoring early and often to earn a weekend split.
Courtney Poelman picked up her first OUA goal just over three minutes into the game and although they added three more, the game’s first tally proved to be the game-winner.
Jennifer Milligan scored eight minutes later and Cassidy Brooks buried her sixth of the season at the 20-minute mark to put the Lakers up 3-0.
Annika Nolte earned assists on Nipissing’s second and third goals, grabbing a pair of points in the win.
Avery Cafaro capped off the scoring with her first of the season at the 70-minute mark, making it 4-0 Lakers.
Jessica Emmerton grabbed the assist on the final goal of the game.
Madison Heeley earned the clean sheet for the Lakers.
Nipissing returns home for a pair of games this weekend as part of Nipissing University’s Homecoming weekend.
Saturday, the Lakers take on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at noon and wrap up the weekend in a rematch against the Ravens.
Game time for both matches is noon at the Nipissing Turf Field.
Lakers men with a split
The Nipissing Lakers men’s soccer team capped off the weekend moving back to the .500 mark after splitting a pair of road games.
The Lakers dropped a 4-0 to the Carleton Ravens Saturday in Ottawa before returning the favour to the RMC Paladins Sunday in Kingston, winning 3-0 and moving their record to 3-3-0.
The Ravens proved to be too much for the Lakers, as they scored twice in each half to pick up the victory.
Carleton scored at the 11-minute mark and again in the 41st minute to go up 2-0 at the halftime whistle.
They added goals in the 71st minute and again at the 86-minute mark to cap off the scoring and earn the win.
Nipissing made sure the road trip produced some results, as they picked up a key win against RMC, with the game-winner coming in the first half before they sealed the win with two goals in the second half.
Nick Phyllis tallied his first of the season 25 minutes into the game, a goal that stood up as the game-winner.
Mario Bidollari and Elias Goritsas both tallied in the second half to seal the win and the three points.
All three goal scorers recorded their first of the season, giving Nipissing four different goal scorers on the young season.
Nipissing returns home for a pair of games this weekend as part of Nipissing University’s Homecoming weekend.
