Women's Hockey

The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team remained perfect after earning their fifth win of the season Saturday night at Memorial Gardens.

Coming off a win over Windsor Friday morning, the Lakers made it a perfect weekend thanks to a 3-1 win over the visiting Western Mustangs.

Nipissing began the game on fire, scoring three times in the first period despite both teams firing eight shots on goal.

Maria Dominico kicked things off with her third of the game, set up by Brianna Gaffney and Madison Laberge.

Melanie Young extended the lead to two goals as she scored her second of the season less than five minutes later.

Katelyn Heppner and Maggie McKee earned helpers on the second goal of the game.

McKee then buried her first of the year and second point of the game at the 12:40 mark of the opening period to put Nipissing up by three.

Malory Dominico and Young, who also had two points in the period, picked up assists on the goal.

In the middle frame, the lone goal came from the Western Mustangs, as they cut into the Nipissing lead.

After 40 minutes, the Lakers held a 3-1 lead.

The pace was high in the third, but nothing in the way of offensive changed between the two teams as the Lakers held defensively and maintained their two-goal lead.

In the end, Nipissing stays perfect thanks to a 3-1 victory.

Danika Ranger finished with 21 saves, including a penalty shot stop against North Bay native Hannah Irwin.

The final shots read 23-22 in favour of Nipissing.

Nipissing is back on the ice next weekend when they take on the Brock Badgers Saturday and Guelph Gryphons Sunday, both on the road.

Short-staffed Lakers fall to Gryphons 
 
The Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team dropped today’s contest to the Guelph Gryphons by a final of 9-4 in Guelph. Jacob Collins, Harrison Harper, Dan Desrochers and Drake Lindsay scored for the Lakers.
 
Collins and Cam Moore had a pair of assists each as well.
 
After a hot start, the Lakers have lost four straight and are now 4-4-0-1. 
 
The Lakers are back in action Wednesday evening at home when they host the Ryerson Rams at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gardens. 
 
Women's Basketball

Saturday night was a tough one for the Nipissing Lakers women’s basketball team, as they welcomed a very strong, skilled Windsor Lancers team to North Bay.

The Lancers, who entered the game undefeated, put together four strong quarters and came away with a 72-34 victory over the Lakers.

The Lancers jumped out to a quick start and set the tone for the game.

The first quarter was exciting as both teams used their speed to run the court, but it was Windsor who held the advantage, up 22-14.

A big second quarter by the Lancers had them in control at halftime.

They outscored Nipissing 17-5 in the second and led 39-19 at the break.

Windsor dominated the third quarter as well, extending their lead to 56-19 late in the quarter and finishing 30 minutes, leading the Lakers 59-25.

As is always the case, the Lakers refused to quit and fought back in the fourth, but the difference was too large.

In the end, Nipissing lost 72-34 to the Lancers.

Nipissing is back in action next weekend when they host the Western Mustangs on Saturday night.

Men's Basketball

It was an exciting night of basketball at the Surtees Athletic Centre Saturday night.

The Lakers welcomed the Windsor Lancers to town, who are coming off a win Friday night against Laurentian in Sudbury.

The teams traded points all night, with a number of lead changes, ties and momentum shifts throughout the 40 minutes of action.

In the end, Windsor escaped with an 83-72 victory over the Lakers.

The teams got off to a bit of a tentative start, but it was Nipissing attempted to pull away and led 14-13 late in the quarter.

After 10 minutes, Nipissing held a five-point lead, 18-13.

In the second, Windsor fought back and took a 29-20 lead into the late stages of the half.

Both teams found their legs in the third quarter and started to heat up shooting the ball.

Late in the quarter, Nipissing held a slight 50-48 advantage and at the end of three, they were on top of Windsor 54-50.

With eight minutes left in the fourth, the game was tied 59-59, but Windsor was able to pull away as time went on.

The Lancers led 74-65 late and closed out the win despite allowing the Lakers to score seven more points in the final minutes of the game.

Windsor eventually came away with the 83-72 triumph.

Nipissing remains at home and will play host to the Western Mustangs next Saturday at 8 p.m. 

Lacrosse
 
The Nipissing Lakers lacrosse team picked up a huge playoff win today, defeating the Bishop’s Gaiters 13-12 in Huntsville. Nipissing scored twice late to complete the comeback and pick up the win.
 
They now advance to the Baggataway Cup at McGill. NU will take on Western Friday night at 8 p.m. in the first game of the championship weekend
