The Nipissing Lakers lacrosse team has been able to battle through some adversity so far this season.

Twice they have bounced back after losses and picked up key wins, including their first of the season a few weeks ago and Sunday, when they topped Carleton on the road following a tough loss to Ottawa Saturday.

The Lakers dug themselves a hole early in the game, trailing Ottawa 4-0 after one quarter, but fought back to cut the deficit to just one before halftime.

Down 5-4 heading into the third quarter, the Lakers couldn’t close the gap as they were down 9-6 after three.

In the fourth quarter, Nipissing cut into the Gee Gees lead, but it wasn’t enough, as Ottawa held on to an 11-9 victory.

Scotty Dominey led the Lakers attack with three goals and an assist, while Nick Chaykowsky and Doug Utting each added two goals and an assist.

Bryan Kells and Alex DeGagne also scored for Nipissing.

On Sunday, while they didn’t take control of the game until overtime, the Lakers played a more complete game from start to finish.

With the score 3-3 at halftime, Nipissing opened up a three goal lead after three quarters, but the Ravens fought back to tie the game and send the contest to overtime.

In the extra period, it was all Lakers as they scored five straight goals to claim the 17-12 win and even their weekend up.

Chaykowsky had a monster game, scoring six goals and adding four assists.

Doug Utting and Alex DeGagne each found the back of the net four times and combined for 11 points, while Tyler Goodchild, Mark Smydo and Keiran Peltier added a goal apiece.

After six games, the Lakers are 2-4-0 and have six games left on the schedule, but just two at home.

Their next action comes this weekend when they hit the road and travel to Peterborough for a pair of game versus the undefeated Trent Excalibur.

Game times are 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at the Trent Justin Chiu Stadium.
