The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team entered Saturday night’s contest looking to make it two wins in a row, as they’re coming off a solid win Wednesday night on home ice.

After having their four-game winning streak snapped last weekend, the Lakers bounced back and are now looking to heat up once again.

Nipissing hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks as part of Break The Ice on mental health, put on by the Nipissing University sports marketing class.

In the end, the Lakers were able to pull out a 3-0 victory over the Hawks, improving to 6-1-0 on the season.

In the opening period, Nipissing struck first as newcomer Lana Duriez found the back of the net, setup by Emma Thomas and Kamryn Grooms.

The first period wrapped up with just the lone Lakers goal, as they led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.

Shots favoured Laurier 8-5.

Most of the second period went by without too many chances or quality opportunities and the score remained 1-0 for the majority of the 40 minutes.

With a few minutes left in the second, Malory Dominico buried her fourth of the season to double the Lakers lead.

Maggie McKee grabbed one assist and Duriez – with her second point of the game – had the other helper on the goal.

Shots were 14-12 in favour of Nipissing after two periods of play.

In the third, the Lakers added their third of the game as Maggie McKee jammed in a loose puck at the side of the net.

Katie Chomiak had the lone assist on the goal.

A goal a period, strong defensive play and some quality goaltending all added up to a clean game for the Nipissing and another win on the season.

Chantelle Sandquist finished with 21 saves for the shutout win, while the Lakers fired 23 at the Laurier net.

The contest also was a homecoming for former North Bay Ice Boltz forward Eryn Wolfe, who played her first game in North Bay as a member of the Golden Hawks.

Next up, the Lakers host the TMU Bold for a pair of games next weekend as part of Nipissing Homecoming.

Lakers men fall to 1-7-1

The struggles continue for the Lakers varsity men's hockey team.

Facing a tough weekend against two very strong opponents, the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team was hoping to build on their first win of the season.

Coming off a win last weekend on the road, the Lakers welcomed the Carleton Ravens to town for a Saturday night contest at Memorial Gardens as part of the Break The Ice on mental health event.

In the end, it was the Ravens coming away with the win, 4-0, over the Lakers.

The Ravens broke open a close 1-0 affair with three goals in the final frame for the road win at Memorial Gardens.

Lakers goalie Zach Roy made 29 saves in a losing cause Saturday night.

Nipissing will remain on home ice next weekend, hosting the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks for a pair of contests on Friday and Saturday.
