A late third period push by the Concordia Stingers proved to be too much for the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team Saturday night at Memorial Gardens.

The Lakers held a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play, but the Stingers scored three times in the third period to walk away with the 4-2 victory and escape North Bay with a win and two points.

The teams traded goals in the opening period, with the Lakers getting on the board first on the power play.

Jacob Hickey scored his first of two to give Nipissing the lead at the 10:30 mark of the period.

Jacob Collins and Deverick Ottereyes picked up assists on the goal.

The Stingers answered with just over two minutes left in the period on a power play marker of their own and sent the teams to the intermission tied 1-1.

The lone goal in the middle frame came off the stick of Hickey again, as he gave the Lakers the lead with 12 seconds left.

Collins grabbed another assist, as did Danny Desrochers.

With the score 2-1 after 40 minutes, the Lakers looked to lock things down, but three goals in the first 10:46 of the period gave Concordia a lead they would hold on to as they pick up the victory.

Nipissing finished with 47 shots, while Concordia had 35.

Francis Asselin made 31 saves in the contest.

It was a costly loss, along with an RMC win today, leaves the Lakers now in a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot, although RMC holds a game in hand.

The Lakers are right back at it Tuesday as they host the last place Laurentian Voyageurs.

Game time is 11 a.m. at Memorial Gardens.
