With a lot on the line to close out the first half of the season, the Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team hit the ice Wednesday night at home.

The Lakers, who sit first in the OUA, welcomed the Waterloo Warriors, the second ranked team to Memorial Gardens.

In a potential championship preview, it was the Warriors who escaped North Bay with a 2-1 shootout win over the Lakers.

The lone goal of the first came off a great power move from Jill Hennessy, who took the puck wide, drove the net and made no mistake, putting Nipissing up 1-0.

The goal came late in the first and sent the Lakers to the dressing room up a goal.

In the middle frame, the Warriors replied with a goal of their own, tying the game.

Each team tallied once through 40 minutes, with the showdown living up to the hype.

After a goal each through the first two periods, there was no offence to report in the third as the teams headed to overtime to decide the game.

Overtime decided nothing, as the game wrapped up in a shootout.

Waterloo managed two goals, while only Abby Lunney scored for the Lakers, who fell short for the first time in 10 games.

Chantelle Sandquist was busy and strong, finishing with 41 saves in the game and another in the shootout, while Nipissing had 27 shots of their own.

Nipissing is back in action in January to resume the second half of the season.
