The Nipissing Lakers men’s soccer team was four minutes from a huge win and two minutes from gaining valuable points.

And in the end, they came up short, losing a heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon to the Carleton Ravens.

The Lakers, who led 1-0 after a goal in the 60th minute, gave up two late tallies and lost 2-1 in our Nation’s Capital in their lone game of the weekend.

William Tsilkas continued his strong season, picking up the first goal of the game – his third of the season – to give Nipissing the lead 15 minutes into the second half.

The teams had battled, scoreless, through the first half.

Deven Doodnath picked up an assist in Tsilkas’ goal.

With just four minutes remaining in regular time, the Ravens tied the game at one and two minutes later, took the lead.

From there, the Lakers ran out of time and came up short despite deserving, at worst, a point for the draw.

Achuthan Shanmugaratnam was busy in net, making eight saves and even though he was steady in net, as he has been all season, he’s tagged with the loss.

Nipissing returns home for the next two games, facing the Laurentian Voyageurs, wrapping up the Riley Gallo Cup on Wednesday.

It also continues the season-long 705 Challenge Cup, which is tied 1-1.

After that, the Lakers host the Ravens on Saturday as part of Nipissing Homecoming.

Wednesday’s game is set for 8:15 p.m. at Scollard Hall, while the game Saturday will begin at 2:15 p.m. at Scollard Hall.
