Nipissing Lakers basketball coach Chris Cheng has been named a head coach of Team Red at the BioSteel All-Canadian Basketball Game next week.

The game features Canada’s top emerging basketball players in the third annual edition of this high school all-star game.

The BioSteel All-Canadian Basketball Game tips off Monday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. exclusively on TSN.

“It is an honour and privilege to be named one of the head coaches for the BioSteel All-Canadian All-Star Game," said Cheng in a release.

"I would like to send my sincere appreciation to the committee and organizers for choosing me. I am excited to work with all staff, organizers, and especially the top athletes in our country. This event promises to be an exciting one and I am excited to be a part of it.

“This weekend will be a great learning opportunity not only from other coaches and support staff but from the athletes as well. I plan to take what I learned over the course of the weekend and implement that knowledge into our growing Lakers program."

Cheng was named head coach of Men’s Basketball at Nipissing University in 2013 at the age of 28, at which time he was the youngest head coach in Canada’s USports.

He previously served as men’s varsity assistant coach with the York University Lions from 2008 to 2012, guiding the team to a playoff appearance in all five seasons.

As the head coach of Ontario Basketball’s 17U Boys Team, Cheng’s teams captured back-to-back national championships in 2011 and 2012, and he was named the 2011 Ontario Basketball Men’s Elite Coach of the Year.

In addition to his coaching duties at Nipissing, Cheng maintains his involvement with Canada Basketball Development Programs and National Teams.
