This Friday marks a special day for more than 60 Nipissing Lakers athletes, who will be honoured for their work outside of sports.

On top of being elite athletes and participating in the highest level of sports in Canada aside from the professional ranks, these student-athletes have excelled in the classroom.

There will be 61 Nipissing University student-athletes who will receive the CIS Academic All-Canadian recognition at a breakfast Friday morning at 100 Elements, on the Nipissing University campus.

All of the Lakers CIS teams have at least two student-athletes who have earned the honour, as well as five Nordic Skiers who will receive the OUA Academic Achievement Award.

It is modelled after the CIS award, but is limited to OUA specific sports.

In total, 66 Lakers will be celebrated for academics.

The student-athletes who earn this prestigious honour are inspirational to the great Nipissing community and Lakers Athletics would like to congratulate them for their work ethic and determination.

About CIS Academic All-Canadians

In 1988, the CIS introduced its first Academic All-Canadians, those exceptional student-athletes who achieve an academic standing of 80 per cent or better, all while playing on one of their university’s varsity teams.

CIS Academic All-Canadian distinction is one of the highest recognitions a university student athlete can receive.

Athletes at Nipissing University spend over 20 hours per week on school work, while committing at least another 20 hours to athletics, as they practice daily and compete most weekends.

On top of this, many student-athletes find the time to volunteer with various community organizations.
