Lakers add to their blueline for inaugural season

Nipissing University Lakers women’s hockey coach Darren Turcotte is happy to announce the addition of blueliners Meghan Carty (Kanata, ON) and Kayla Carter (Orleans, ON) to his inaugural 2013 roster.

Carty, a 5’7” self described stay-at-home defenceman, plays for the Ottawa Lady Senators of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). In thirteen games played thus far, Carty has four assists and sixteen penalty minutes.

"I have had the opportunity to watch Meghan on numerous occasions and she competes every time she is on the ice,” said Turcotte.

“She is able to use her size to her advantage and very rarely gets outbattled for any loose pucks.

Turcotte went on to say that Carty may not bring immediate offensive numbers but her defensive play will make it difficult for any team playing against her.

"I am very excited to be a part of the first Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team and making it a strong OUA contender right from year one," said Carty.

“I have also had the opportunity to play against North Bay team's that have been coached by DarrenTurcotte and they have always been tough opponents and very well coached. I am looking forward to improving my skills under the Nipissing coaching staff," she added.

Carter, a 5’5” defenceman also plays for the Ottawa Lady Senators of the PWHL. In thirteen games played Carter has one goal and two assists with 12 penalty minutes.

"There were several factors that captured my interest in Nipissing including the highly recommended Education program, the small classroom sizes, the small community atmosphere and the awesome residences," said Carter.

Carter feels that her strongest asset is her work ethic. “I am always striving to become a better player,” she said.

Head coach Darren Turcotte describes Carter as a well rounded player with some offensive upside.

"Her skating and puck movement skills are very good and she is going to be a great asset to our program," said Turcotte.

Turcotte has watched the defensive pairing in Ottawa and he likes the chemistry the two have developed. To have them both join the Lakers will certainly be an added bonus for the team.
