The Nipissing University Lakers men’s and women’s soccer teams traveled to Sudbury for important division matchups in OUA soccer action on the weekend,

The Lady Lakers played a much stronger match then the previous weekend, however, they couldn’t find the back of the net as the Laurentian Vees won 3-0.

The winners opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Marissa Iszma scored on a cross from Kristy MacKenzie.

In the second half the Lakers pressed and were relentless in their attack challenging for every ball and as a result the Lakers were rewarded with seven corner kicks.

The Lakers pursuit continued and at the 65th minute Nipissing‘s Stephanie Muldoon was fouled in the 18-yard box and was awarded a penalty kick. The penalty kick could have changed the momentum of the game.

Keeper Katie McNamara made the save and the Vees scored their second goal a minute later when Erin Wilkes kicked the ball past Lakers keeper Kristine Snedden who came out to challenge the shooter.

“I thought we played very well. We deserved a better outcome,” said head coach Vito Castiglione. “We didn’t finish on our second chances and if we had scored on that penalty kick the outcome of this game may have been different.”

Erin Wilkes scored her second goal of the contest in the 80th minute on a pass from Kristy MacKenzie.

The Lakers are now 0-3-0.

The men’s squad lost 6-0 to fall to 0-3-0 on the season.

The Lakers started out on a shaky note as a pass from the defence deflected off a Nipissing player right to Joseph Jesseau who kicked it passed Lakers keeper Ian Sharp at the 2:29 minute mark. Patrick Murphy scored the Vees second goal at the 6:58 minute and Joseph Jesseau added his second of the contest at the 12:05 minute mark.

Nipissing never recovered and in an effort to make things happen the Lakers were too aggressive and received two red cards leaving the squad short handed for most of the game. The Vees added three more goals to close out the contest.

Both Laker teams hit the road for a pair of weekend games when they take on Guelph University Sept. 25 and Ryerson Sept. 26.
