Laker men's soccer team set for camp

The Nipissing University Lakers men’s soccer program has completed its 2004 recruiting campaign.
The Nipissing University Lakers men’s soccer program has completed its 2004 recruiting campaign. The 2004 freshman group includes numerous players from across the province and features midfielder Kurt Teixeira, Ottawa, midfielder/forward Andrew Hubbert, Markham, and forward Carlo Torelli, Woodbridge.

Teixerira has developed under the Kanata Soccer Club for numerous years, and has had the opportunity to travel around the world. He has participated in the OYSL for numerous years and recently attended a camp at John Hopkins University in Baltimore and at the US Military Academy at WestPoint.

Hubbert has developed from the Markham Lightning Soccer Program. He has recently received the honors of athlete of the year at Country Day Private high school in King City.

“This is a solid class and we are very excited about it,"” stated Lakers head coach Rob Celebre.

The Lakers will have 17 players returning from last year's playoff squad and coupled with the new recruits should make for a very competitive training camp.

Among the starters returning are the Lakers 2003 MVP goalie Ian Sharp, and key players Claudio Devuono and Cam Culbert. Returning are also several other players who have proven their ability to excel at different positions.

The Laker’s training camp opens Saturday Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. at the Education Centre Field. The team will travel and play four exhibition games Sept. 4, 5, 6 and 8.

The Lakers open the regular season at the Education Centre Field versus the University of Toronto Blues Saturday Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
