There was a huge increase in numbers for the second annual Nipissing University youth soccer camp.
Last year, there were 13 and this year, 52, ranging in age from seven to 14, signed up for the five-day camp.
“It’s been really great,” chief instructor Vito Castiglione said. “The kids are here to have fun and they did.”
Castiglione, who is the athletic director at Nipissing University and also the women’s soccer team head coach, made sure each participant had a chance to do plenty of skill development drills.
“Some of the players on the men’s and women’s soccer teams were here as well as a couple of Nipissing District Association players,” he said.
The week ended with a version of the World Cup tournament and emotions were high.
Team Italy, undefeated in round robin play in the morning matches, lost out in a shootout to Portugal and it was tough to take.
“They were disappointed,” Castiglione said.
“But all in all the kids had a great time and hopefully they will use the skills they learned here and use them in their summer leagues,” he said.
