More than 130 ski racers will descend on the City of North Bay to participate in the inaugural Laurentian Ski Classic the weekend of February 9 and 10.

Hosted by the North Bay Antoine Ski Racing Club (NBASR) and Laurentian Ski Hill, athletes ranging in age from five to 11 years will be participating in both slalom and giant slalom races.

“We welcome the opportunity to host this race on North Bay snow,” said Duncan Cornthwaite, President of the NBASR in a release.

“This event is a great way to profile the sport of skiing and the unparalleled chance to showcase North Bay’s hill located in the middle of our beautiful city.”

This first-time event will become a permanent fixture in Alpine Ontario’s Northern Ontario Division’s race series with athletes participating from North Bay, Sudbury, Timmins, Elliot Lake, Mattawa and Sault Saint Marie.

Since opening, Laurentian Ski Hill has produced three Olympians in the form of downhill skier Kate Pace, freestyle skier Steve Omischl and Big Air/Slopestyle snowboarder Tyler Nicholson.

For ski enthusiasts looking to catch a piece of the on-snow action, races will be taking place both Saturday and Sunday beginning at 10 a.m..

North Bay Mayor Al McDonald will be kicking-off the event by forerunning the ski course at 9:45 a.m.
