The Soo Thunderbirds came back from a two-goal deficit by scoring five unanswered markers and pulling out a 5-2 triumph over the Powassan Voodoos in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday at GFL Memorial Gardens.
The visiting Voodoos were quick to strike as Clark Allair collected his first of the campaign near the three-minute mark of the first frame.
Powassan then went up by a pair 3:21 into the second stanza on Henry Scott’s 11th.
Battling back with a pair of man advantage opportunities, Sault Ste. Marie got on the board courtesy of Steven Bellini then drew level on an Avery Rebek effort.
Noah Boman then put the Thunderbirds in front 46 seconds after Rebek’s marker as he notched his 20th of the season to give the hosts the leads heading into the third in what proved to be the game-winner.
In the final session, Gage Stephney struck shorthanded at 7:31 to make it 4-2 for the Soo before Kaidan McDonald iced it for the hosts with an empty netter in the late going to round out the night’s scoring.
The Thunderbirds also held the edge in shots on goal by a 28-27 count with Colin Ahern picking up the win while Joe Vrbetic suffered the loss.
With the win, the Soo became the first league side to reach 30 victories this season.
The Voodoos are back in action Saturday night in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan as they take on the Soo Eagles.
