Gagnon wins silver medal at Junior Nationals

The Canadian Weightlifting Federation’s Junior National Championships were held in Regina, Saskatchewan on Saturday.

The Canadian Weightlifting Federation’s Junior National Championships were held in Regina, Saskatchewan on Saturday.

The event featured competition in seven female weight divisions and eight male classes. Seven provincial organizations sent teams.

In the female competition, Ontario’s Vanessa Gagnon, a member of the North Bay Valkyries, took the silver medal in the 69 kilo weight division.

Gagnon, a first year Nipisssing University student, made lifts of 69 kilos in the snatch and 80 kilos in the clean and jerk.

Magalie Rioux of Quebec was the gold medalist, while Meaghan Bradshaw of B.C. won the bronze.

In female team competition, the Quebec squad was first by way of four gold medals for 112 points.

Ontario was the runner-up with two gold, one silver and one fourth place finish for 103 points. The British Columbia team was third with 96.

In the male competition the Ontario team also finished in the runner- up spot behind Quebec. 

Quebec took five golds and one silver for 165 points; meanwhile Ontario had two golds, one silver, and three bronzes for 148.

The Saskatchewan male team was third with 131 points.
