September 23, 2005 - HAMILTON, ON - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced today that the women’s soccer game between York University and Nipissing University on September 10, 2005 has been deemed a double forfeiture due to technical infractions committed by each team.

Last week, it was determined that York University was in violation of Rule 6.1 of the OUA Women’s Soccer Rules and Regulations that state “players eligible to play in any game must be declared prior to that game and entered on the game score sheet.” Ms. Nicole Burling, who scored two goals in the contest, was not listed on the official game sheet prior to the game.

As a result of this infraction, Nipissing was awarded the win. York University, in turn, appealed the decision, rendering it to the OUA Appeals Committee. The Appeals Committee met earlier this week and determined that the initial ruling was acceptable.

During the appeals process, it was discovered that Nipissing had played an ineligible player. Ms. Julia McAvoy received her third yellow card in the last regular season game of the 2004 season. Rule 6.4 of the OUA Women’s Soccer Rules and Regulations state “any player receiving three (3) cautions during the season, shall be automatically suspended from the next league/playoff game following the third offence.” Thus, Ms. McAvoy should have sat out Nipissing’s next game, in this case, the first game of the 2005 regular season. However, she competed in the September 10, 2005 game against York.

Thus, the game has been ruled a double forfeiture from each team, with no points being awarded to either team. The official score recorded will be 0-0, with all individual statistics from the game remaining valid, except for those of the involved players, Ms. Burling and Ms. McAvoy. In addition, since Ms. McAvoy has not yet served her one game suspension, she will now sit out Nipissing’s next game, September 24, 2005 versus Brock University.
