The Record out of New Jersey is reporting the New Jersey Devils have signed goaltender Ken Appleby to a three-year entry-level contract

Appleby, 20, attended training with the Devils and their AHL team in Albany on an amateur tryout after again going undrafted in June.

The Record states that the 6-foot-4, 205-pound North Bay, Ontario native is expected to begin the season with Adirondack of the ECHL, but has not been assigned there, yet.

"I'm very proud and honoured to have signed my first NHL contract with the Devils, can't wait to get things started," Appleby stated Monday via Twitter.

Appleby, who backstopped the Oshawa Generals to the Memorial Cup last season, solidified his bid for a pro contract by making 28 saves in a 2-1 AHL preseason win in Hershey Friday night.

Last season with the Generals, Appleby went 38-7-4 with a 2.08 goals-against average, a .924 save percentage and six shutouts during the regular season then went 16-5 with a 2.24 GAA, a .922 save percentage and two shutouts in the playoffs. In the Memorial Cup final, he made 37 saves in a 2-1 overtime victory over the WHL's Kelowna Rockets.

The former North Bay AAA Trappers netminder shared the Memorial Cup with the city of North Bay back in August.

The signing of Appleby gives the Devils five goaltenders under contract in the organization which include Cory Schneider, Keith Kinkaid, Scott Wedgewood, Yann Danis and Appleby.

Appleby was one of three players to attend camp with the Devils on amateur tryouts.

Appleby is the first North Bayite to sign an NHL Entry Level contract since Matt Marquardt signed with the Bruins (after a trade with Columbus) in May of 2008.
