Canadore lifter heading to World University Championship

Canadore College’s Logan Baker has been named to the Canadian Weightlifting Federation’s team to the 2016 FISU World University Championship.

The event will take place in in Merida, Mexico from November 13th to the 17th.   

Baker, a long - time member of the Norsemen and Valkyries weightlifting team and 2014 Canadian junior champion. is a recent graduate of Canadore College’s Strength and Sport Conditioning diploma program.

The team is comprised of the top ranked Canadian lifters, seven of each gender, enrolled in post-secondary studies. All candidates were required to meet the minimum performance standards in select competitions from late May to mid-August.

The final weekend for qualifying was August 13-14. At that time, the Western Trials were staged in Lake Country B.C., while the Eastern Trials took place in Toronto.  Baker competed in the Toronto contest and surpassed the marker in the 85 kilo class. He snatched 132 kilos and clean and jerked 158 for a total of 290 kilos.  All his lifts were personal, and Norsemen club, records in that division.

The female contingent for Merida, Mexico has five athletes from Quebec, and one each from Ontario and British Columbia.  Marie-Eve Nadeau of Montreal, who lifted for Canada in Rio, is the top ranked female team member. David Samayoa of Calgary, the current national champion in the 94 kilo division, is the top ranked Canadian male.  He and Baker will be joined by five other Quebec males.

The team leader will be Guy Marineau of Lachute, Quebec. Marineau was the Canadian coach at the Olympic Games.

In two weeks Logan Baker will be leaving for Ireland to continue his studies at the Limerick Institute of Technology. He will be working toward his Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Strength and Conditioning at the L.I.T.  campus in Thurles, Tipperary.
